consideration for the appointment as soon as possible.
It is proposed that the Council should later be asked

3. The Governor/suggested that the rate of pay
to be given to the candidate selected should be £1250
per annum. It is assumed that this sum includes an
element of command pay and it appears to be for
consideration whether this element (say £150) should
not be shown separately from the substantive pay of
the post. The Secretary of State would be glad to
receive the Council's observations on this point.
4. The Governor states that he is aware that
the Army Council have expressed the view that a prior
charge on such funds as are available should be an

assumption by the Colonial Administration for full
responsibility for the pay and allowances of the
Adjutant of the Defence Corps. He feels strongly,
a however, that the existing arrangement of the whole-
time Commandant with Regular Army experience is
essential to the efficiency of the Corps, and he
trusts that the appointment of a new Commandant, which
